About This Quote

The figures looked more or less human. And they were engaged in religion. You could tell by the knives (it's not murder if you do it for a god). This quote comes from one of the most infamous murders in history: the serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

He was executed in 1994. He killed 33 men and boys across Illinois, Colorado, and Iowa. But before his arrest, he spoke to a reporter from the Chicago Tribune about his work as a serial killer, including his weapons of choice: his homemade knives.

At the time of his confession, police didn't have any fingerprints or DNA evidence linking him to any of the victims' deaths. The killings stopped after Gacy stopped killing, but not before he made a series of disturbing statements to a writer from the Chicago Tribune. In a three-part series that ran in 1976, this reporter asked Gacy about the dozens of bodies he had left buried across Chicago.

At first, Gacy denied any knowledge of them. Then he changed his story and said that these bodies were not all murder victims—that he'd also committed suicide by hanging himself in his garage with one of these homemade knives from home improvement store Ace Hardware. The point of this quote is that even though there were no fingerprints or other physical evidence linking him to these crimes, there were many other things that linked him to them—the knowledge that he did something horrible and did it for a religious reason.
